Ben Hogan’s Five Lessons: The Modern Fundamentals Of Golf
Ben Hogan’s book is great for new players. It shows you how to make a good swing.
What I want to share is why this book by Mr. Hogan is a real game-changer for golfers like us:
- Mr. Hogan had a golf swing that every golfer dreamed of, probably for as long as golf has been around!
- Everything he talks about in this book isn’t just true; it’s like finding the secret treasure map to becoming a great golfer.
- This book doesn’t show you exactly how Mr. Hogan swung, but it breaks down the really important stuff. There are little tweaks that go with each part, and they only work when you use them all together. It’s like solving a golf puzzle, and the clues are hidden everywhere.
- The most valuable lesson from this book isn’t some mysterious “secret” like people talk about (like having a weak grip or a cupped wrist). The real magic is treating everything Mr. Hogan says in his book like it’s pure gold and practicing it until you really understand how to swing the club just right, where to put the ball, and how to hold the club*. That’s why they call them the 5 fundamentals. Mr. Hogan didn’t say follow this book and have HIS swing – getting a swing like his takes a lot of time and practice.
- Don’t listen to the talk that this book is too tough for regular golfers. This is the ultimate golf book, and I promise you, almost every Pro golfer knows most of what Mr. Hogan is talking about in here. If you don’t give it a try, you’re missing out on discovering your own golf swing. You have to play to have a chance to win!
The Big Miss By Hank Haney

The Big Miss is about Tiger Woods. It shows how even the best can have hard times.
Every Shot Counts By Mark Broadie
This book uses numbers to teach golf. It’s good at showing which shots are most important.
Mr. Broadie did something super cool! He used fancy data and a special golf database to solve all the old golf mysteries. It’s like a new era of golf numbers and strategies. Without this cool data and his smart analysis, we wouldn’t know these secrets.
What kind of secrets? Well, the big ones, like:
- Why the usual golf numbers
- Why just finding “averages” isn’t enough.
- Is it better to hit the ball far or put it well?
- How can we count strokes, putts, and drives?
- Where should we aim at?
- Why are the famous golfers so awesome?
When Mr. Broadie looked at the data, he found out that the top golfers are the real deal: Woods, Els, Donald, Lefty, Rory, and more. It’s not about GIR, FIR, or how far they hit the ball. It’s all about the “Shots Gained” stat, which explains everything, from drives to putts.
Golf’s secrets are now out for everyone to see. I bet Mr. Broadie is already working on another book because this one only scratched the surface.
Harvey Penick’s Little Red Book

The Little Red Book is loved by many players. It gives simple tips that are easy to remember.
If you happened to be in Texas during the 1970s, ’80s, and ’90s and followed golf, you might have known about Harvey. He was the coach for legends like Davis Love III, Tom Kite, Byron Nelson, Kathy Whitworth, and many others. But for me, I was living, working, and golfing in the Caribbean during those years, so I missed out on the USA’s TV channels.
At the start of this book, those famous golf champions introduce us to Harvey, and I was surprised that I’d never come across his name before. If you’re a golfer from that time, you might be in the same boat.
Bud Shrake, who was a cool American journalist, sportswriter, and novelist, helped Harvey put together the rest of this book filled with golf advice. I had some of Harvey’s lessons in my head because I was on my high school’s golf team.
Our coach was a part-time pro back in the ’60s, so I knew about approaching the ball, doing my waggle, and hitting it straight. But hey, if you’re wondering what a ‘waggle’ is all about, this book is just what you need!
